President John F. Kennedy and Vice President Lyndon B. JohnsonJohn F. Kennedy (left) and Lyndon B. Johnson. Bettmann/Contributor/Getty ImagesIn a series of interviews with Jacqueline Kennedy conducted in 1964 and made public in 2011, the former first lady described the contentious relationship between her husband and his vice president, ABC News reported. Jacqueline Kennedy revealed that John F. Kennedy would occasionally say to her, "Oh, God, can you ever imagine what would happen to the country if Lyndon was president?" She also said that the idea of a Johnson presidency made her husband "worried for the country." Johnson did, in fact, become president after John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

Read previewWhen the rich give to charity, they find a way to get the most bang for their buck. If the trust assets are invested and achieve an annual rate of return of 9% a year, the CLT's remainder will be $2.1 million. Advertisement"It's a fantastic low interest rate play," said Renn. "The problem now is rates have really risen and it's to the point where some investments clearly can outperform a 4% or 5% interest rate, but others might struggle." In this interest rate environment, charitable remainder trusts (CRTs) have better odds.

Anya Firestone’s job as a luxury tour guide in Paris has brought her to many rarefied corners of the city. But only recently did she do something that countless locals and visitors have done over the last 130 years: Book a reservation at Maxim’s, the storied French restaurant that opened in 1893 and has counted Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Margrethe II of Denmark, Jean Cocteau, Jane Birkin and Man Ray among its patrons. “The place was packed,” Ms. Firestone, 35, said of the night she ate there in late November. She was not alone in that perception. “Many people, even most, did not realize it was open as a restaurant,” said Pierre Pelegry, a director at Maxim’s who has worked there for 27 years and was hired by Pierre Cardin, the French fashion designer, after he bought the restaurant in 1981.

The White House Historical Association hopes to provide answers to some of those questions when it opens The People’s House: A White House Experience, in the fall of 2024. The center will feature a large cutaway model of the White House with rooms that, with the help of technology, can morph into the Green Room, the Blue Room or the Red Room. People will also learn about the slave labor that went into building the White House. About 500,000 people visit the White House yearly, McLaurin said. The White House Historical Association was created in 1961 by first lady Jacqueline Kennedy to help preserve the museum quality of the interior of the White House and educate the public.

Rubin died Friday at a hospital in Manhattan after “a brief and sudden illness,” according to his nephew, David Rotter. “Steve Rubin was a great publisher,” Grisham said in a statement. “For more than a month, it was humanly impossible to miss ‘Fire and Fury,’" Rubin wrote in his memoir “Words and Music,” published earlier this year. Rubin joined Bantam Books, a venerable paperback publisher, in the mid-1980s, and remained there for six years before leaving for Doubleday. In his memoir, he offered a succinct, if incomplete prediction: “I suppose the headline of my obit will read 'Publisher of ”The Da Vinci Code" dies'.”

‘El Conde’ Review: His Bite Is Worse
  + stars: | 2023-09-14 | by ( Amy Nicholson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Pablo Larraín’s black-and-white horror spoof “El Conde” is founded on a ferocious sight gag: the former dictator Augusto Pinochet soaring into the night on a quest for human blood. This Pinochet, played with imperious cruelty by Jaime Vadell, was once a rebel-eating French royalist who sailed to South America in search of fresh meat. It’s a comic premise — what, is this part of the “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” extended universe? Larraín’s version of the man did that, too, with just one tweak: He blends his victims into a smoothie. And Larraín has resurrected him to drag him into the light.

Rose Styron used to start her daily swim of the season in May, when the waters off the long dock at her house in Vineyard Haven, on Martha’s Vineyard, still barely reach 50 degrees. “Now that I’m 95, though,” she said one day in April, “I may wait until June.”The first of Styron’s four books of poetry, “From Summer to Summer,” a collection for children, was published in 1965. She proposed that the couple not ride in a convertible. In 1961, at 23, Ms. Timmins had become the first person ever to hold the title of press secretary to an American first lady when she joined the staff of Jacqueline Kennedy. It was a post that made her a witness to considerable glamour and considerable tragedy.
